The Tyranny of Pants.....337 Days to go!

OK, ladies, who HATES jeans/pants shopping?  I don't think I am particularly hard to fit. I am a size 4 tall. I am normal shaped (or so I think until I go shopping for pants). I wear normal sizes in every other kind of clothing. So, why, WHY is it so hard to find jeans/pants that fit? I swear, either it gives me a muffin top, or it makes me look like my hips are gonna burst out of my pants through the seams, or it gives me a ghetto booty...the list goes on. Jeans/pants shopping is hellish enough that it makes me REALLY glad I can't shop right now!

How did this all come up? I rediscovered some jeans I bought at the end of last winter and haven't worn yet (because, of course, you get the best deals at the end of the season!).  I didn't fit them great last season, but I ended up losing weight over the summer. I tried them on, and, of all things, they fit perfectly everywhere but IN THE KNEES!!!! What the hell? They were too small in the knees. My knees, I thought, were a normal size. Totally normal. Maybe even smallish. Nope, not in PantsLand (which, FYI, is basically a 2nd Hell). I am fat-kneed in PantsLand.

Because I hate pants and pants/jeans shopping so much, I generally only buy from 1 brand that I am well acquainted with, and I have one cut (which has been discontinued. Thanks J.Crew), that I like. I just buy many, many, many pairs of the same kind of pants. So, for those of you who know me and strongly suspect that I only have one pair of pants...nope, I actually have many duplicates. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Although, I really should branch out eventually. Now if I could only get J.Crew to continue making my favorite jeans...

And, I do have to say that sewing really helps in the pants debacle. If I don't like some small thing, I can fix it. I can bring the waist in, make the legs narrower, etc. Easy to do. But, do I like it? Not ONE bit. Now if you'll excuse me, me and my fat knees need to go make dinner. Please do share any feelings on the horrors of pants and jeans shopping in the comments:)

  1. I definitely agree that there is a "Tyranny of pants". I always have hard time finding pants. For years I hardly wore them!

  2. Yeah, it is almost worth it just to switch to skirts! However, in the climate I live in it'd get a little too cold year round!

  3. Pants are the worst! I'm 5' even. Unless I want to shop at a specialty store, almost ALL pants are WAY too long for me. Where your knees are, sit in the middle of my calf. I've got like, 4-5 inches of extra pant on the bottom. It's gotten to the point that I try to buy tall people's Capri so that they fit like normal pants on me! Grr! *shakes fist angrily* I hate you pants tyranny!

  4. Lol, you poor thing, Alicia! That sounds very frustrating! I am glad to not be alone, in despising the tyranny of pants, however. Do petites work for you at all?

  5. I kind of like you in a ghetto booty, personally. My jeans problems comes in the rise. I have a short rise, longer legs and a shorter torso. So, anything but low-cut, straight leg jeans look ridiculous on me. Like seriously so. It's hard to find a rise that looks right (not too high so as to make me look "40 year old soccer mom-ish) and not too low (so as to look "ghetto fabulous), which is why I'm on the "own as many pairs of jeans that look normal" train as well. And don't even get me started on the hips. I have fairly narrow hips, so if the leg isn't a straight leg, it looks comical on me.

  6. I hate pant shopping! I actually just got back from a trip to the mall.. I needed some new work pants and my problem is that pants always fit me in length, but don't fit at the waist. Or the butt area and thigh area is so big on them that I look like I'm being eaten up my pants. Same for jeans. They're always too long, I hate it.

I have 1 pair of skinny jeans that I fold whenever I wear them. Another pair that my mom's sewn for me. A pair of work pants I've gotten hemmed.

I picked up 3 pairs from Express today.. fit nice in the waist, butt region, etc.. but like.. 3 inches too long. What the hell, how TALL are these ppl? I'm 5'2ish and about a size 0-2 (not really petite though) but how tall do they think size 0 people are???? I hate it.. my mom said she'll hem those pants for me tonight so I can start wearing them to work. =/

I'd love to meet a person that actually has pants fit them straight out of the store

  8. I LOVE hearing what everyone has to say! I go from laughing to thinking "Oh, that's some good insight..." Thanks, Karen, for your ghetto booty commentary, and I'd love to see you in some comical long-rise, curvy cut jeans:) Lol. And Mom, you look fabulous in those CC jeans! Nice work on those!!!

  9. Oh, and Bindiya, I enjoyed your insight as well. Express has great pants, I can wear those pretty easily with some re-hemming, it's nice your Mom will help so much!:)

  10. Jeans/pants shopping is the worst. I'm also kinda short, but I find petite pants end up being too short after a wash or two. And the others are super long. So frustrating!! And a lot of the pants balloon in the hips making me look like a clown!! I found Lee works kinda ok on me... depending on the kind. Old Navy used to, but now they are all weird.
Glad to hear I am not the only one. So, who wears the pants that are in the stores if they make most women look strange?

  11. You're one month in, how ya feelin?!

  12. Lent, I dunno who wears them. Lol. We should all design a special task force of women to find out. But, I totally feel your pain. And Alicia, aren't you sweet:) I feel fine, although it seems longer than a month. So far, I think this is totally do-able!:) thanks for asking!!:)

  13. Just found your blog & love it! I also dislike pants shopping so I do it online and you're exactly right, sewing makes things so much easier. I found a jean style that worked and now I accumulate them auction-style from ebay. They are all used so they are cheaper, plus with a sewing machine I can get about 3 different sizes and make them all fit.

  14. Hey Jessgoddess! I also accumulate my jeans from eBay! Lol. It really can be so much cheaper. That is great you are able to alter them so easily, as well! If you have any tips at any point, please do share!!:)

  15. Try having the High school track calves from HELL. Not only do non-boot-cut jeans NOT fit, but boots are impossible. Unless I pony up for the Nordstrom fat-lady calve boots with the ginormous stacked icky-assed heel. Oh, the angels cry in heaven. Honestly. Why didn't our track coaches warn us???? Bitches.

  16. LOL, you crack me up. I think it's less track and more family genes, because we both have been blessed with awesome calves. Embrace them, and eschew the evil boots that make you feel like your calves are less than wonderful! Because they are nothing but hotness!:)
